The Significant Investor Visa (188C/888C visa) (“SIV”) programme is a pathway to provide for significant migrant investment into Australia under the Business innovation and Investment visa programme. The purpose of the visa is to provide a boost to the Australian economy whilst providing an opportunity for high net worth investors to migrate to Australia.
As an SIV applicant, you must first obtain sponsorship from one of the Australian states or territories or from Austrade (Australian Trade Commission). Upon receiving sponsorship, you may then lodge an application for the SIV. A member of your family unit can be included as part of your application and apply for a secondary visa that is linked to your SIV application.
The Australian SIV holder will enjoy an unrestricted stay for yourself and your family for up to 8 years (4 years of 188C provisional visa with up to two extensions of two years each).
SIV holders and their family will be able to live, study, work and play like Australians, as well as have the ability to travel to and from the country without immigration restrictions.
You will have the option to apply for a permanent visa (888C) if the following is met:
- Be nominated by the Government of an Australian state or territory or Austrade for applications lodged after 1 July 2015;
- Have held the provisional188C visa for at least 4 years;
- Have satisfied all of the investment conditions in a continuous manner for at least 4 years;
- Have met the residency requirements.
Over the 4 year period, the primary visa applicant must have lived in Australia for at least 160 days, or just over a month each year. These days do not have to be continuous in order to qualify, and can be divided up in whichever way suits you and your family.
Alternatively, your husband, wife, or de facto (long term) partner who is the secondary applicant can reside in Australia for a total of 720 days over the four year period in order to make you (the primary visa applicant) eligible for the Subclass 888C Visa. Again, these days do not have to be continuous.
